What is ICSI?
ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) involves injecting a single sperm directly into each mature egg, rather than mixing sperm and eggs together as in conventional IVF.
ICSI follows the same process as IVF — stimulation, egg collection, embryo culture and transfer — but with one key difference: a single healthy sperm is selected and injected directly into the egg using a fine needle under a microscope.
Who is ICSI for?
ICSI is primarily recommended for severe male factor infertility — very low sperm count, poor motility, or abnormal morphology. It's also used when sperm is surgically retrieved, when previous IVF cycles had poor fertilisation, or with frozen sperm.
ICSI costs
ICSI is usually offered as an add-on to IVF, adding £1,000–£2,000 to the base IVF cost. Some clinics include ICSI as standard in their IVF package. Always check whether the quoted IVF price includes ICSI or charges it separately.
