IVF success rates decline significantly with age because egg quality and quantity decrease. For women over 38 using their own eggs, the average UK birth rate per egg collection is around 19%, compared to 30-35% for under-38s.
However, there is enormous variation between clinics. The top-performing clinic achieves 37% — that's 1.9x the average. Choosing the right clinic matters more at this age than any other.
Cost per live birth matters more here
When success rates are lower, the headline cycle price becomes misleading. A clinic charging £5,000 with a 10% success rate has a cost per live birth of £50,000. A clinic charging £7,000 with a 20% rate costs £35,000 per baby.
